Cecelia Horton Auten passed away on December 30th, 2021 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s.

Celi was a lifelong Charlottean, born January 25th 1941, the first child of the late Roy Wylie Horton and Amanda Wilson Horton. She graduated from West Mecklenburg High School in 1959 where she also drove a school bus. She married John Alexander Auten III in 1960 and they moved into the Westchester neighborhood shortly after. She was very active in the Westchester community, serving the optimist club as a cheer and softball coach, as well as serving as president of the swim club for many years. Many neighborhood kids considered her a second mom, her house at the end of Wabash was always the place to be.

She served as a Justice of the Peace and a Notary Public. She had a strong work ethic that she instilled in all her children and grandchildren, working at various family businesses over the years including Mecklenburg Drywall, A&A Custom Design, and Station 49 to name a few. She was a devoted mother and Nana who was beloved by her family and  is survived by her sons Alex Auten and wife Tabitha of Greenville, NC and Greg Auten and wife Candy of the home, and by granddaughters Emily, Mandi and Patsy Auten.

The family would like to thank The Citadel Myers Park for their love and care over the past two years and keeping “Ce-Ce” safe and happy. We are so grateful for you all.
