Erwin Luther Starnes
07/17/1937 to 10/12/2016
Erwin Luther (Luke) Starnes (79) of Concord left his earthly body to eternal life on Wednesday, October 12, 2016. He was a devoted father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. He was a true hero to many who never knew his name, through his work with the Burlington Fire Department, Charlotte Fire Department and EMS. He will be sorely missed. Preceding him in death are his wife Doris “Dee” Starnes, parents Edward and Elsie Starnes, brother Jimmy Starnes, and sister Elaine Boggs. He is survived by 7 children, 20 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and numerous “adopted” children whom he coached during decades of service as a baseball, basketball, football, and softball coach with various youth sports organizations. In addition to his love of coaching youth, he was also an avid fisherman and animal lover. Captain Luke Starnes retired from the Charlotte Fire Department in March of 1990 after 30 years of dedicated service. He was also a veteran of the NC Army National Guard. A memorial service will be held Monday, October 17 at Hopewell Baptist Church - Legacy Campus in Monroe. Visitation at 10:00 am; service at 12:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Charlotte Firefighters Foundation 2601 E. 7th St. Charlotte, NC 28204 or your local Humane Society.
