Mr. Joseph ”Mickey” Vann Wilson, 83, of Mint Hill, NC died peacefully Wednesday, February 12, 2025, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
The visitation will be at Philadelphia Presbyterian Church on Saturday, February 15 th from 12:00pm until 1:30pm. The funeral service will follow at 2:00pm with a graveside service immediately following at Sunset Memory Garden.
Mickey was born to the late Howard and Mamie Wilson. He and his twin sister, Midgie, were the youngest of 5 children. He grew up in Derita and graduated from North Mecklenburg High School. Mickey was drafted into the U.S. Army (1963-1965), assigned to Fort Rucker with a temporary three-day layover in Vietnam before returning stateside. Upon discharge from the U.S. Army, Mickey worked for the NCDOT transporting road crew inmates or driving a dump truck during the construction of Lake Norman. He later applied to the Charlotte Fire Department, and on April 19, 1968, he would begin a 28 year career that he would retire from on December 27, 1995. During his time with the Charlotte Fire Department, he was always assigned to busy firehouses, with his last assignment as an engineer on Ladder 2.
After retirement, Mickey could always be found somewhere around Mint Hill or at his home. He was usually messing with his chickens, working in the garden that never grew, picking up sticks in the yard or just enjoying time on his front porch.
Mickey is survived by his wife, Hannah (Watts) Wilson; son, Brian Wilson (Susan); daughter, Allison McGee (Cliff); step-children, Scott Broadaway (Meredith), Brad Broadaway (Amber), and LeAnne Snipes; grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Kendall, Madeline, Payton (Samantha), Caroline, Zack, Brennan, Katie, Harrison, Gage, Justis, Brynnleigh, Adaline, and Salem; his twin sister, Barbara “Midgie” Brawley; along with several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Mickey’s caregivers at The Drake Assisted Living Facility. He was well cared for and loved by many. We would like to give a special thank you to Kevin, who loved and cared for Mickey in such a way that we will always be grateful for.
We would also like to thank VIA Hospice for the exceptional love and care that they showed Mickey and our family.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for any gifts to be made in the form of donations to VIA Health Partners (https://www.viagiving.org/one-time-giving) or Samaritan’s Purse-Hurricane Helene Relief.
